For Easter weekend I decided to visit my friend Kevin, who is working for the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. Easter is a big holiday in Italy and I had 5 days off! Our friends Grace and Sarah, who are studying near Madrid, came to visit earlier in the week with their friend Chris who is studying with them and stayed until Friday. I left early in the morning on Thursday and was sad I had to leave them so soon but excited to go see another friend so soon! Thursday morning I was just 2 seconds away from having a panic attack because the way I was traveling everything had to work out perfectly and, thank God, it all worked out great! I arrived in Brussels in the afternoon and took the metro to where Kevin lives. We dropped off my stuff at his house and then went and got a bite to eat near where he works. I got to see the huge, beautiful building that the European Parliament works in and hear all about what Kevin does there everyday. Basically he researches issues for a member of the parliament and tells them what they should do about different things. The different countries in the EP throw parties all of the time with drinks and food from their countries to get on the other countries good sides. It all sounds wonderful to me. Especially because you get to know SO many people from around Europe. You will see my point by the end of this post. So anyway...we ran into one of Kevin's friends named Peter who is Scottish and used to work at the EP but was leaving for Scotland the next day. Then we went to Parc du Cinquantenaire to meet up with Kevin's friends Jonas (from Germany) and Anja (from Sweden) and drink some delicious Stella Artois! We sat and chatted for a while and then went back to Kevin's to eat and get ready to go out! We went to a bar called Cafe Belga and I got to meet more of Kevin's friends. I met some of the coolest people from all over the world! Everyone was so nice and friendly that I felt like I had known them for months, not just a couple hours!
The next day we went to the center of Brussels to see some of the tourist attractions. We saw the Royal Palace (they will be attending Kate and William's wedding...jealous), Mont Des Arts and Grand Place, which is this gorgeous square where Town Hall and a bunch of other really pretty buildings are. Apparently it's one of the most beautiful squares in Europe;it's really not hard to believe. After that we went to see Manneken Pis, which is a little statue of this little boy peeing. No, I'm not making this up. Also, he was dressed up as a gangster and the Fresh Prince of Bellair theme song was playing. No, I'm not making that up either. It was hilarious. Apparently they like to dress him up in little outfits all of the time. After that, it was waffle time!! Omg I had the most delicious waffle I've ever tasted in my whole life. I'm salivating just thinking about it. A short while later, Anja called and we met up with her and her friend Matilda, who was visiting her from Sweden! They spoke to each other in Swedish all the time and I swear it's the cutest language. They tried to teach us the numbers 1-10 but I only remembered et (1), fem (5), and sex (6) and don't cast judgement, you would only remember the funny ones too. Anja and Kevin took us to a famous frites (fries) place and they were delicious!! They double fry the potatoes in pig fat. It's awesome. Next we met up with Jonas and went back to the center of Brussels to go to a bar with over 2,000 beers. Isn't that crazy?? The one I randomly picked out was really good and I give Belgian beers a big stamp of approval. Once we got out of the bar it was raining! It was especially random because it had been hot all day. We went back home for a bit and then got ready to go out again. We went to this Spanish bar that had really good drink specials and met up with some French friends that Jonas knew. I had the best time just getting to know people and talking about the differences of the countries and stuff. At one point in my trip I was talking to someone about camping and mentioned S'mores and they all looked at me like I was crazy so I started to describe them but as soon as I said "Well you take a graham cracker", I was asked what a graham cracker was. haha Eventually Anja and Matilda came and we talked for a bit before we decided to go to a club called Havana. It had some interesting people in it but I think we made a good time out of it, especially when Juanez came on. Once we were sufficiently exhausted, we decided to leave and started to walk home. Well we quickly figured out we weren't very close to home and the metro and buses had stopped working so in Brussels you can rent bikes from one place and then replace them in another place once you get to it. So we drunkenly rode these bikes home. I wish I had a picture because I'm sure it was hilarious. Thank God we did though because it would have been a longggg walk!
The next day we went to Antwerp with Kevin's friend Daniel and his girlfriend, Laura, who was visiting from Spain. My first impression of Antwerp was at the train station and it was absolutely gorgeous! I have never seen such a pretty train station. There was lots of glass, metal and gold embellishments. We went out of the station and walked through a long street filled with SO many stores! I could have probably just shopped on that street all day. Lucky for everyone else I'm now poor so there wasn't too much shopping! We went by some really pretty buildings, the Cathedral of Saints Michel and Gudule, and a bunch of other buildings no one knew. Then we had lunch and met up with a girl named Catrina from Scotland that Kevin is friends with. We all continued on and walked down the boardwalk near the river and then stopped for a coffee. Afterward we walked back to where the train station is and looked at a bunch of the diamond shops. Antwerp is famous for their diamonds so we all picked out our favorite pieces. Catrina and I got a waffle and then we all got on the train to go back to Brussels! We went home and then met the usual group at a cafe called Red Monkey to grab some drinks before heading over to Cafe Belga again. There we met more new friends from England and Norway.
The next day was Easter and everyone had planned on doing brunch at Anja's house. It was actually adorable. We had all kinds of food like French toast, german sausage, fruit, eggs, cheese, swedish fish (not the candy!), like 5 types of bread and mimosas! I had such a great time and it was fun because almost everyone I had met the days before was there. After we were nice and full, we went to a park near Anja's house and leisurely drank beer and chatted. We spent almost the whole day there and I honestly don't know how the time flew so fast! Eventually it was time to go home and I had to wake up at 3am the next day so we grabbed some food on the way home and basically passed out until my alarm went off the next morning! Thankfully everything was smooth sailing going home and before I knew it I was back in Italy! It was SO great to see Kevin and meet all of the fantastic people he's met! The whole thing made me want to work in Europe sooo bad! Sadly my time here is dwindling! On Saturday I leave to visit my family in Napoli! How did this all go so fast?? :(
